SEPTEMBER 2006

COMMANDER’S CORNER:  The Labor Day Picnic will be on Sunday, 3 September, and as always we’re trying to push “MEMBERSHIP for Early Birds.” If you pay that day you get to eat “free” – sounds like a good deal to me.  You’ll be ahead $5.00 and get to visit with all your Legion friends.  Come out and enjoy the fun.  The Post Color Guard won an award at the State Convention of which I’m very proud.  They have recently participated in a “Take back our Neighborhood” parade in Titus Town on one of the hottest days ever, and they did well.  The Guard has also participated in services at the funeral homes for Vets and members.  Hopefully, they will also be in the “America Supports You” parade downtown Norfolk at Waterside on September 11th.  Everyone in the Post should be proud of what this group is doing.  Thanks ladies and gentlemen.  Congratulations to Casimiro “Tony” Cabacungan for being bestowed with the exalted title of “Legion Cook Emeritus”.  For God and Country, Mary Lee Lupejkis

PAST POST COMMANDER:  Post 327 was presented the 2005-2006 POST OF THE YEAR award and the Jefferson Award at the 2nd District Planning Conference on 13 August 2006.  I would like to give a big THANKS to all of my 2005-2006 officers for making this happen; 1st Vice CDR Byron Pianalto, 2nd Vice CDR Todd Baitis, Adjutant B.J. Miller, JAG W.T. Jones, Chaplain Tony Moore, Finance Officer Larry Turner, Sgt-at-Arms Carl Carney, Historian Jim Pearson, Service Officer Tony Cabacungan, and the Executive Board, Jimmy Taylor, Gus Anderson, Mary Lee Lupejkis.  A Special thanks to 2nd District Adjutant John Schenk for all the hard work he did to help us win the awards.   For God and Country, Jim Dunning

FIRST VICE COMMANDER:  Our current membership is 651 and 57%.  We are off to a good start but renewals have really slowed down in the last week.  Be sure to renew as early as possible so that it doesn't slip your mind and you have to pay the increased dues starting January 1st.  Your dues must be received at the Post by 20 December so they can reach the Department in plenty of time for processing and mailing to National HQ.  A sign up sheet is posted for the Thursday night Legion Dart Teams.  Be sure to sign up as soon as possible so that you know how many teams we will have this year.  The number of teams that sign up will determine when we start playing.  For God & Country, Byron Pianalto.

SECOND VICE COMMANDER:  The Labor Day Picnic will be held on Sunday, 3SEP06 from noon ‘til 6:00p.m.  Fish, sausages, hamburger, and hot dogs are on the menu.  Volunteers and side dishes are needed and appreciated.  These picnics are for you, the members, and your families.  Melissa Miller will be our D.J.  Your suggestions are welcome, needed, and appreciated. The (C&Y) Children’s Halloween Party will be on Sunday, 29OCT06 from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.  There will be presentations on Safety and the Ident-A-Kid program.  If your child will be wearing make-up, please bring a picture.  New Year’s Eve will be here before you know it.  Don’t forget, I need your suggestions for a band, please contact me at 425-0520.  Thank you for your support.  For God and Country, Johnnie A. Maples, II

SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER:  Membership is going well, but we could be doing better, so come on out and renew your dues.  Also, we need to get everyone’s birthdates to send to National Headquarters.  National needs this information so they can come up with a formula for us to have a “Life Membership”.  We will have a grounds cleanup on Saturday, the 2nd of September at 10:00 a.m. prior to the car show.  This month we will be swapping ticket weekends with the “Honor Guard”.  If you can come out and help, please contact a SAL officer.  We will have tickets on the 5th weekend instead of the 2nd weekend.  For God and Country, Brooke Gillespie

HUMOR:  A man was sitting on the edge of the bed observing his wife turning back and forth looking at herself in the mirror.  Since her birthday was not far off, he asked, “What would you like for your birthday?”  “I’d like to be six again,” she replied, still looking in the mirror.   On the morning of her birthday, he arose early, made her a nice bowl of Lucky Charms, and then took her to Six Flags Theme Park.  What a day!  He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster…every ride there was.  Five hours later, they staggered out of the theme park.  Her head was reeling, and her stomach was churning.  He then took her to a McDonald’s where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake.  Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda, and her favorite candy, M&M’s.  What a fabulous adventure!  Finally, she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed on the bed, exhausted.  He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, “Well, dear, what was it like being six again?”  Her eyes slowly opened, and her expression suddenly changed.  “I meant my dress size, you idiot!”  The moral of the story:  Even when a man is listening, he is going to get it wrong.

For God and Country, B.J. Miller-Nobles
