All Hands,
There will be no 1 OCT Bulletin and possibly no 15 OCT one. About
2 weeks ago my laptop computer on which I do the Bulletin started
having major lockups and multiple screen displays. Not being very computer
literate I took it to Best Buy on 19 SEP (1 day after expiration of
HP's new computer one year warranty) for their computer department to
determine the cause of the problems. Yesterday I was advised the mother
board needed replacement at a cost of $878. I have decided to buy
another. Computer prices have come down significantly but setup charges are
out of sight. What I paid $2000 for last year can be replaced for
$900. However I must buy new Windows programs and have them installed so I
can hopefully salvage from my old hard drive my data base which
contains 14 years of data I reference when writing the Bulletin. Programs and
their installation fees will run another $300 plus a 3 year warranty
for $400. Since I am on my laptop 10-12 hours a day (probably why the
letters on the keyboard letters are disappearing), I suspect my
motherboard failure was from the heat buildups inherent in laptops. Hopefully
my 14 year data base will remain intact and when all is done I will be
able to continue publishing the Bulletin.
In the interim I am using my daughter's computer. Although I am
unable to access any of my data, I can receive and send email on it but
will not be able to write any articles, act on any change of address/new
subscriber/removal requests, or answer questions that require me to
access my data base. Also, it looks like I will have to sacrifice my
Microsoft XP with its VISTA replacement. I anticipate this will cause
numerous problems due to its slower operation and incompatibility with some
of my data base. I am able to send you this message via my online
mailing list provider (MLP) who maintains the Bulletin's address book.
You can continue to send me messages. Those I cannot respond to I will
put on hold until I can answer them. Copies of past newsletters can be
downloaded at http://www.ymlp134.com/pubarchive.php?raoemo.
