OCTOBER 2008

COMMANDER:  Hello everyone.  September was a very busy month, and it looks like October will be busy also.  I look forward to seeing you at the Dept. Fall Conference in Hampton 31 Oct-2Nov 08 (Blue & Gray).  Please support all Post activities.  Thanks to our Historian Tony Moore for filling in as Chaplain and to our 2nd VCDR Mike Bukowski for filling in for the Adjutant at our Post meeting last month.  Welcome back CPO Victoria Bell.  Congratulations to the American Legion Riders on the 3rd annual American Legion Legacy Run.  They raised over $515,000.00 for the American Legion Scholarship Fund to help children of U.S. Service members who die on active duty, on or after September 11, 2001, to realize their dream of a college education.  Post 327 AL Riders Director Jim Hollenbeck received a thank you letter from National Commander David K. Rehbein for a donation of $100.00.  For God and Country, B. J. Miller

FIRST VICE COMMANDER:  Well folks, you made another goal.  You got 55% for 1 October 2008.  Renewals are slowing down.  All you guys and gals that haven’t renewed need to get off your butt and renew.  For God and Country, “Skip” Kelly

SECOND VICE COMMANDER:  Thanks again for all the help I received at the Labor Day Picnic.  The picnics are successful due to our great volunteers!  Our next official social event will be the New Year’s Eve party, so stay tuned for more information.  Hope to see you at the Fall Conference in Hampton.  Let’s see if we can have a big turn-out from the Post Family.  For God and Country, Mike Bukowski

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY PRESIDENT:  Hi Ladies.  I hope everyone enjoyed the Labor Day picnic.  It was great and thanks to all the people that helped.  October is going to be busy.  We have the Chaplain Remembrance dinner on 3 October.  The menu is beef tips over noodles, salad, and dessert.  October 7th is “make a difference” day.  We are asking everyone to bring a can of food for that day.  October 10th will be the annual Vets Fish Fry.  We could use a lot of help with this dinner.  The Halloween party will be on Saturday, 25 October from 1-4:00 p.m.  We need candy donated for the party.  We will have a haunted village in the banquet hall on Wednesday, 29 October.  Information will be available at the Post home.  Thank you to all that participated in Dawn's annual Children and Youth skit.  We had a blast.  I need to make a correction to our email address.  The correct address is Tidewater ala327@yahoo.com.  For God and Country, Nancy Bell

SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER:  Greetings Comrades! Well, summer is over, and all the children are back in school.  Please watch out for them as you drive around our school zones.  I would like to thank everyone who has helped with our summer fund raisers, picnics, dinners, and tickets.  We raised a lot of money for our programs.  It took a lot of work, but we were able to give much more back.  Special thanks to the 40 & 8 for a great program honoring the POW/MIA Troops.  They did a great job and got the whole Legion Family involved.  Also, thanks goes to "Chef " Tommy Turner and his assistants for a job well done with the dinner.  They prepared almost a 100 dinners and sold out in 30 minutes. The fall conference is at the end of the month. It’s being held at the Holiday Inn in Hampton.  The S.A.L. MEETING will be held Sat. Nov. 1 at 1:00 pm. The Squadron will pay registration fee for anyone wanting to attend.  This is a great opportunity to meet some fellow S.A.L.'S from around the state and exchange ideas about what we are all doing.  Remember, everyone comes to have a good time, and these meetings are no pressure!  It's just good times and fellowship!  Being one of the largest Squadrons in the state, we should have a good showing.  Please come out and show everyone why we are NO. 1.  Membership is doing well.  We are over 50%.  If you haven't renewed yet, please try to this month so Dave can take a whole bunch to the Conference.  For God and Country, Steve Gower, Sr.

POW/MIA CEREMONY:  The second annual POW/MIA Ceremony was a memory book showing of our pride at Post 327.  Two of our honored guests were (POW/WWII) Stanley Woody, BMC, USN (Ret.) and Mrs. Aline Silvia who is a Gold Star mother.  All military branches of the armed forces were honored as well as each organization involved at our Post home; the Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion, Tidewater Unit 327 Auxilary, Vietnam Veterans Association, and the 40/8 Voiture Locale 86.  All came together for a heartfelt tribute to those who sacrificed their Freedom and the supreme sacrifice of their lives.  From the Pledge of Allegiance to the bagpipe "Amazing Grace", to the final word REMEMBER, this was a ceremony that shall be in our hearts and minds when we see our Flag and the POW/MIA flag.  To our departed, their families, and those who are still in harms way, we pray for you.  For God and Country, Larry Turner and Jimmy Taylor

CAR SHOW:  The American Legion car show was a great success.  This event raised over $500.00 each for the Post and Auxiliary charity funds.  We all outdid our donations this year and wish to thank each of you who helped with this annual charity event.  Winners:  1st Place Trike - Jerry Campbell, 1st Place car - Jimmy Taylor, Jeep - Russ Abrams, Driver's choice - Howdy Bailey.  For God and Country, Larry Turner, Jimmy Taylor and Tony Moore.

HUMOR:
From my email – 1.  Let's go for stupid - A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead." 2.  Drunk?  The drunken wino was stumbling down the street with one foot on the curb and one foot in the gutter.  A cop pulled up and said, "I've got to take you in, sir.  You're obviously drunk".  The wasted wino asked, "Ociffer, are ya absolutely sure I'm drunk?" "Yeah, buddy, I'm sure," said the copper. "Let's go." Obviously relieved, the wino said "That's a relief - I thought I was a cripple."

EDITOR:  I apologize for the newsletter being late this month due to my computer crashing and late inputs.    I would like to thank all of our volunteers for doing such a wonderful job helping with our fundraisers.  Please continue to report any community service hours and all expenses/contributions that you make.  Note:  The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot is now online from wherever you are in the world.  Go to OverseasVote Foundation.org.  May God bless each and every one of you with good health and happiness.  For God and Country, B.J.
