OCTOBER 2007
COMMANDER’S CORNER: October is a very busy month. Please remember to support all Legion family events. The Post’s 60th anniversary is well in the planning. We are looking for some of your great memories at Post 327. Please give the Post Historian Michael Bukowski anything you would like others to know about such as pictures, newspaper articles, or write-up, etc. Please remember to record your hours and miles. They are very important. The District Fall Conference will be held at Post 190 at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, 7 October. The Department Fall Conference will be held FRI-SAT-SUN, 26-28 October at the Holiday Inn Hampton Coliseum Hotel & Conference Center, 1815 W. Mercury Blvd. Registration is $6.00. You must be registered to attend any function. Please see the Adjutant or 1st Vice for a registration form. This is a good learning experience. Since it’s so close to Norfolk, I hope to have a great turn out of the Post family. I, Steve Gower, Sr., Dawn Thomas, and three juniors, had the great privilege of presenting the Legion family check of $1,500.00 to MDA on Channel 10 TV on the 3rd of September. For God and Country, Johnnie A. Maples, II
FIRST VICE COMMANDER: The 2008 membership is currently at 62%, thanks to those that have renewed. Be sure to renew before December, so that we may make our 100% before the end of the year. For God and Country, Byron Pianalto
SECOND VICE COMMANDER: Thanks to all those who assisted with making the Labor Day Picnic a smashing success. Without the volunteers we had, it wouldn’t have gone so well. We now focus our attention on the 60th anniversary in December, followed closely by New Years Eve. The menu and entertainment for New Years are really shaping up. More to follow. For God and Country, Gary L. Rodencal
CHAPLAIN: I visited Ray Steckman in the hospital last month and Ken Nobles at Sentara Leigh after his surgery. Mike Eschweiler is in room 18 at the VA Hospital in Hampton. He would appreciate visitors. Barbara Serowik is at Lake Taylor in room 37. For God & Country, Robert Edwards
AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY PRESIDENT: Hello Ladies. Goodness, October is here already. Membership, Membership! Your renewal letters should be out sometime this month. PLEASE help us meet our goals. Ladies, you can send in your membership without your renewal letters, just send it to the Post’s address, and we will get it. The Vets will be here on Oct 5th. We are going to need all the help we can get as well as desserts for them. You know they like their sweets as well as the fish. The same night will be fish for dinner on the menu. Don't forget we have dinners every Friday and breakfast every Sunday. The children’s Halloween Party will be Oct 28th at 1:00 p.m. Bring the little ones out for some goodies and fun. The Fall Conference will be held in Hampton on Oct 26th-28th. Our District Meeting will be Oct 14th at Post 5 at 2 p.m. WE all thank K-Mart for the nice discount they gave us for the school supplies that we took to seven schools. For God and Country, Dawn Thomas
SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER: Hello everyone. Jeff Evans and I are fresh back from the National Convention in Reno! I would love to tell you all about it, but you know what they say, WHAT HAPPENS IN RENO STAYS IN RENO. I can tell you we had a lot of fun and came back with a little more $ than we left with. The Detachment of Virginia did very well. I was called to the big stage to receive 3 National Awards for Americanism, Membership, and Children and Youth! CONGRATULATIONS to SQUADRON 327 for being the first squadron in Virginia history to receive a National Award. You guys beat out 12 states and over 1000 squadrons in the Southern Region to receive the NATIONAL CHILDREN AND YOUTH AWARD!! For a former State Commander to be called on to receive an award for a squadron is awesome, but to get one from my own squadron, well, let’s just say I have never been prouder. I would like to thank everyone for doing such a great job! Squadron 327 is fast becoming one of the best in the state. I would like to see a great turnout for the Fall Conference in Hampton at the end of the month. Everyone please try to attend our 1:00 p.m. meeting on Saturday and show why we are number one. Anyone who can help with building a trophy case for the SALs in the clubroom, please see me or Jim Norton. Thanks to everyone for helping with ticket sales. As you know that is one of our best fundraisers. Check at the Post for our next Family outing. For God and Country, Steve Gower, Sr.
ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT: NEWS from the suggestion box. In regards to the idea to have port-a- potty at the Post picnics, we have allotted money to renovate the restrooms in the dance hall. This should take care of that problem. The Association picture board will be updated at our next meeting. You will find suggestion cards next to the suggestion box. THANK you, Pat, for making them up. Until next time, keep the suggestions coming!! For God and Country, Jim Norton
ASSOCIATION CLUB MANAGER: Please refer to the newsletter calendar for scheduled entertainment and dinners. Also, please remember a lot of planning and preparation goes into our dinners, so PLEASE try to support them. For God & Country, Sandra Wright
HUMOR: They always ask at the doctor's office why you are there and you have to answer in front of others what's wrong. Sometimes it is embarrassing. There's nothing worse than a receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong with you in a room full of other patients. I know most of us have experienced this, and I love the way this old guy handled it. An 86-year-old man walked into a crowded waiting room and approached the desk. The receptionist said, "Yes sir, what are you seeing the doctor for today?" "There's something wrong with my penis," he replied. The receptionist became irritated and said, "You shouldn't come into a crowded waiting room and say things like that." "Why not? You asked me what was wrong and I told you," he said. The receptionist replied, "You've caused some embarrassment in this room full of people. You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and discussed the problem further with the doctor in private." The man replied, "You shouldn't ask people questions in a room full of strangers if the answer could embarrass anyone. The man walked out, waited several minutes, and then re-entered. The receptionist smiled smugly and asked, "Yes?" "There's something wrong with my ear," he stated. The receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken her advice. "And what is wrong with your ear, sir?" "I can't pee out of it," he replied. The waiting room erupted in laughter. Mess with seniors and you're going to lose!
EDITOR: Thank you Chaplain Edwards, Michael Toole, Jim Taylor, and Byron for all of your help while Ken was in the hospital last week. Thanks to Dawn Thomas for her donation of a new walker and other items that Ken needed. FYI: The Service Officer, Angela Ellis, will be at the Post on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month between the hours of 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. to provide service, answer questions or assist in the Service Officer capacity. If you have an urgent situation, please call her at 757-404-6111. Congratulations to Squadron 327 on receiving their well-deserved awards at the National Convention in Reno. Well done! May God bless each of you with good health and happiness. For God and Country, B.J. Miller-Nobles
