NOVEMBER 2008

COMMANDER:  Greetings Everyone.  Don’t forget to vote 4 November.  A musical salute to veterans, “Surrounded by Heroes”, will be held Saturday at 7:00 p.m. 8 November at Chrysler Hall.  The concert is free and open to the public, but tickets are encouraged to help ensure seating.  Tickets may be obtained through the MWRITT offices at NAB Little Creek, NAS Oceana, Naval Station Norfolk, Fort Eustis, Fort Monroe, Langley AFB, Chrysler Hall box office, or send a self-addressed envelope to USJFCOM Public Affairs, Attn: STV Tickets, 1562 Mitscher Ave., Ste. 200, Norfolk, VA 23551.  Please indicate the number of tickets requested.  For more info call 836-2118.  Note for Post Executive Board: The next meeting will be held on Monday, 10 November at 7:00 p.m.  We will not have a regular meeting in November due to the holiday.  The Veteran’s Day Parade show time is 9:00 a.m. 11 November in Virginia Beach.  Please join us for this event.  The Post and Auxiliary will hold the annual Boys/Girls State and Jr. Law Cadet awards night on Tuesday, 25 November at 6:30 p.m. in the Post Banquet Hall.  We are having Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and ham and all the trimmings on Thursday, 27 November at 2:00 p.m.  It would be great if some of you could bring a side dish or dessert for the dinner.  Thank you to everyone who visited and called me during my stay in the hospital last month.  Thank you Chuck Howe for your volunteer work.  You’re doing a great job.  Thank you Ed Casey and Cliff Carney for storing the flags that were in the office, and thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help us raise money for our charities.  We couldn’t do it without you.  Note:  Now’s the time for Post Committee Chairmen to start getting their reports together for our annual Consolidated reports.  For God and Country, B. J. Miller

FIRST VICE COMMANDERWell, guys & gals, you all met another goal for November 65%.  Keep those renewals coming in.  Just for information, your $30.00 dues are divided up; $19.00 goes to Department to divide with National, and $.50 goes to the 2nd District.  That leaves $10.50 for the Post.  Rumor is out that Dept. & National are going up on their cut so standby for an increase in Post 327 dues.  For God and Country, “Skip” Kelly

SECOND VICE COMMANDER:  As the days get colder and the nights get longer, we look forward to the Holiday Season.  The New Year’s Eve party tickets will be on sale later in November.  Watch the bulletin board at the Post Home for more details. With the Fall Conference in Hampton behind us, it is time to commemorate Veterans Day, and celebrate Thanksgiving.  Don’t forget those who need a helping hand and lend one when you are able.  I hope to see you at the Veterans Day parade in Virginia Beach.  For God and Country, Mike Bukowski

SERVICE OFFICER:  Greetings All.  Please only give the following number of 757-404-6111 to anyone requesting assistance.  Also, I am still in the learning process on how to appeal claims that have been denied by VA.  For anyone needing assistance on appealing claims, you may contact a local VA representative.  Their contact information is as follows:  6350 Center Drive, Building #5, Suite 100, Norfolk, VA, 757-455-0814.  For God and Country, Angela Faith Ellis

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY PRESIDENT:  Hello Ladies.  October is over and the holidays are upon us.  Our dinner was a great success for the vets, and they had a great time watching Dawn’s skit.  It was wonderful to see the smiles on their faces while they ate and watched our entertainers.  The kids had a ball at the Halloween party.  The costumes were fantastic.  Don’t forget to vote on November 4th.  We are having a pork chop dinner on the 7th of November.  There will be the Veterans Day parade on the 11th.  We are trying to get boxes together for overseas.  If you would like to donate toilet articles, hard candy (no chocolate), cookies, please bring them to the Post and give them to me.  Membership renewals are doing great, but we still haven’t received all 100%.  Please renew now.  Thank you to all that have volunteered this month for all of our fundraisers.  We couldn’t do it without you.  For God and Country, Nancy Bell

SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER:  Greetings Comrades!  First, by the time you read this the Fall Conference will be over.  I would like to thank all of those that attended.  It was good to see a few new faces, and I hope everyone got something out of it that you can take back to your Squadron.  Coming up on November 7th & 8th we, along with the Auxiliary and Juniors, will be creating a Healing Field like the one we did in Washington, D.C. We will be planting 500 flags to honor all of our Veterans, Past and Present for Veterans Day on 11 November.  I would like to see as many Sons and Juniors as can make it, to come out on Saturday morning around 9:00 a.m. to assist with planting the Flags.  I would also like to thank our Congresswoman, Thelma Drake for donating the flags and her continued support to our Legion Family.  How many LAZY MEMBERS do we have at the Post.  Well, the Sons have got something for you.  As you might have seen the signs around the Clubroom , the Sons are raffling off a brand new LAZY-BOY recliner just in time for Christmas.  Tickets can be purchased at the Post for a dollar each or 3 for two dollars.  The drawing will be held at the adult Christmas Party.  This chair would be a nice addition to anyone's home or would make a great gift for someone in need.  Please come out and support us so we can continue to do our best in supporting the Legion programs.  For God and Country, Steve Gower, Sr.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH:  The Angel tree will go up and the sign-up list will be posted right after Thanksgiving.  Sign your child’s name on the list.  Please do not let your child sign their own name.  Take a name tag from the tree, buy the gift, and bring the gift back wrapped with the tag on it.  Shopping day will be 15 December and the wrapping day will be 18 December.  The Children’s Christmas party will be 21 December from 1-5:00 p.m.  For God and Country, Dawn Thomas and Jim Dunning.

ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT:  ELECTIONS***ELECTIONS***ELECTIONS

Association board of directors elections.  Elections will be held on Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at the Post.  Nominations will be accepted at the Association meeting on January 20, 2009.  If you intend to run for an Association office, you must be nominated and accept the nomination at this meeting.  If you cannot attend this meeting you may accept a nomination to run by providing the Nominating Committee with a letter stating your intentions prior to the meeting.  On election day ballots will be available from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  You must have a current American Legion Post 327 membership card to receive a ballot.  There will be two amendments to the association by-laws to be voted on during the elections.  They are amendments to ARTICLE II, meeting of members.  This article states that the annual meeting of members will be held in the meeting hall in February of each year.  Amendment number 1 would read as follows: The annual election of American Legion Post 327 Board of Directors will be held on the Sunday before the third Tuesday of February each year.  Amendment number two would read as follows:  The annual meeting of American Legion Post 327 Association will be held on the third Tuesday in February of each year.  The purpose of this meeting is to present the newly elected Board of Directors and to conduct any such business that may come before the meeting.  For God and Country, Jim Martin

HUMOR:  The Navy Chief scowled, “Look, I don't know what kind of bleeding-heart, liberal stuff they're teaching Sailors in boot camp today, but I don't call anyone by their first name.  It breeds familiarity and that leads to a breakdown in authority.  I refer to my Sailors by their last name only - Smith, Jones, and Baker - that's all.  I am to be referred to only as Chief.  Do I make myself clear?”  “Aye, aye, Chief!”  “Good, now that we got that straight, what is your last name?”  The new guy sighed and said, “Darling.”  “My name is John Darling, Chief!”  “Okay, John, here's what I want you to do.”  (Way to go Chief!)

EDITOR:  Please continue to report any community service hours and all expenses/contributions that you have made.  May God bless each and every one of you with good health and happiness.  For God and Country, B.J. Miller
