MAY 2009

COMMANDER:  I’m sorry we had to cancel the Post Golf Tournament due to lack of interest.  Only 4 people signed up and we needed a minimum of 30 – 40 players.  Hopefully, we can reschedule in the near future.  ELECTION of 2009-2010 Post officers.  The election will be held at the Post meeting on Tuesday, 12 May.  Thank you Sandi, Nancy B., Jeanne A., DeeDee F., Mark D., Bob D., and Cliff C. for all your help with the Post dinner last month.  I couldn’t have done it without you.  The Post needs volunteers to help with flag disposal.  We have numerous old flags in the garage that have to be disposed of which means we have to separate the blue field and the stripes from the flag before we can dispose of them in a proper manner.  That’s a lot of cutting and sorting.  Please contact me or 1st VCDR “Skip” Kelly at 587-2641 if you want to volunteer.  Our dinner this month will be Steak & Steamed Shrimp on the 8th of May.  This will be a fundraiser for charity.  The VA Hospital Country Fair will be in Hampton on 13 May at noon.  On 20 May the NJROTC Awards Program will be held at NAVSTA Norfolk at 9:00 a.m. On 25 May the Memorial Day Parade will be held in Portsmouth at 9:00 a.m. The VA Beach Memorial Service will be at the Memorial at 11:00 a.m. Reminder, we are doing consolidated reports at this time, if you haven’t turned in your hours and miles please do so ASAP so the Post can get credit for it on our reports.

Upcoming events:  7 June at 1:00 p.m. - 2nd District Convention at Post 327, 12 June Consolidated Reports due to Awards Chairmen, 14 June at 6:00 p.m. Flag Day Ceremony at the Post.  9-12 July Department Convention at the Sheraton Richmond West Hotel – Reservations must be received by 9 June 2009 ($106.00 per night).  Leadership College will be 8-10 August at the same hotel. Please see the Post Adjutant Victoria Bell or the 1st VCDR for Reservation forms.  For God & Country, B. J. Miller

FIRST VICE COMMANDER: Membership is currently 1,054 at 95%. Please renew your membership for 2009 if you have not already done so.  We need your help to meet our 100% goal. For God and Country, “Skip” Kelly

SECOND VICE COMMANDER:   As Summer approaches, it won’t be long until it is time for the Memorial Day picnic.  This year’s picnic will be on Sunday, 24 May from noon until 6:00 p.m.  We will have the usual picnic fare:  hamburgers, hotdogs, Italian sausages, and BBQ chicken.  Please bring a side dish that serves at least 10 people and get in free!  As always, these picnics are a success because of our volunteers.  If you would like to help out please contact me or watch for the sign-up sheet to be posted on the meeting room door.  Dart enthusiasts – if you are interested in playing on a Summer travelling Monday night dart league, please contact my wife, Sharon, at 679-3304.  Starting in mid-June, this will be the first Monday-night league hosted at the Post home.  For God and Country, Mike Bukowski

ALA PRESIDENT:  Hello Ladies.  Happy Spring!  May is here, and we will be having dinner May 1st which will be Joyce Kelly’s Norfolk Chow Mein.  Our meeting on May 5th will be our ELECTIONS.  If you are interested in any office position please contact Cathy Rook or Victoria Carney.  Don’t forget the Memorial Day picnic on Sunday, 24 May, bring a dish and enjoy the fun.  Do not forget we are still looking for membership to make 100%.   For God and Country, Nancy Bell

SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER:  Greetings Comrades! SECOND NOTICE – Elections will be held at our June meeting.  Anyone interested in running for office, please let one of your officers know or show up to be nominated from the floor.  All positions are open to anyone who is current with their membership. Speaking of that anyone, who has not renewed please do so ASAP.  David would like to get our 100% before June.  Our playground project is coming along.  We purchased a new swing set made of salt- treated wood rapped in vinyl. This should keep our children from getting splinters and last at least 20 years.  We will have about $2,600.00 invested in this, and I would like to thank all who have helped with our fundraisers. Without your help this would not be possible.  I would also like to thank the Juniors and Legion Riders for helping pay for the new sand and mulch. We should have a nice ribbon cutting ceremony at the Memorial Day Picnic. The 3rd Annual Poker run will be June 14th.   Registration will be from 9:00 a.m. ‘til 11:00 a.m. at the Post.  The Legion Riders are joining us for our annual Poker Run. The party and fundraiser will be at Knuckleheads Roadhouse with music by the SHEDNECKS.  Posters and merchant letters are at the post. Please help spread the word and, hopefully, we will have a large turnout.  Anyone who has a business or knows someone that can donate goods or services for our auction would be greatly appreciated. These are Tax Deductable donations, and we are helping the YWCA Women’s Battered Shelter and the American Legion Legacy Fund.  Please help any way you can, so we can continue to help those in need. All funds raised will be used in the Hampton Roads area to help our friends and neighbors. We will be having a Mexican Dinner on May 15th for $7.00.  Please come out and enjoy a great meal and support your SONS.  I would like to congratulate our S.A.L. OF THE YEAR, Father Time ROCKY ENGLISH.  Rocky has been our squadron Chaplain for at least the last 19 years straight. He has done such a great job he even inherited a church.  Thank You Rocky for doing such a great job, and we hope you continue for years to come!  For God and Country, Steve Gower, Sr.

ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT:  Profanity in the Clubroom is getting out of hand and will not be tolerated.  The bar managers will give you two warnings about your language.  The third time you will be asked to leave.  Refusal to leave will be treated as conduct unbecoming a legionnaire.  We are a family oriented organization, and it’s time to start acting that way.  Also, for those of you who may be unaware, children under 18 years old must be out of the club no later than 9:00 p.m.  For God and Country, Jim Martin

HUMOR: From my email- Ralph came home drunk one night, slid into bed beside his sleeping wife, and fell into a deep slumber.  He awoke before the Pearly Gates, where St. Peter said, “You died in your sleep, Ralph…Ralph was stunned.  “I'm dead?  No, I can't be!  I've got too much to live for. Send me back!”  St. Peter said, “I'm sorry, but there's only one way you can go back, and that is as a chicken.”  Ralph was devastated, but begged St. Peter to send him to a farm near his home.  The next thing he knew, he was covered with feathers, clucking, and pecking the ground.  A rooster strolled past. “So, you're the new hen, huh? How's your first day here?”  'Not bad,” replied Ralph the hen, “but I have this strange feeling inside, like I'm gonna explode!”  'You're ovulating,' explained the rooster.  “Don't tell me you've never laid an egg before?”  “Never,” said Ralph.  “Well, just relax and let it happen,'” says the rooster. “It's no big deal.”  Ralph did, and a few uncomfortable seconds later, out popped an egg!  Ralph was overcome with emotion as he experienced motherhood.  He soon laid another egg -- his joy was overwhelming.  As he was about to lay his third egg, he felt a smack on the back of his head, and heard his wife yell – “Ralph! Wake up! You messed in the bed!

EDITOR:  Please put “Chuck” Gardner on your prayer list.  If you would like to receive your newsletter via the Website please send me an email so I can take you off the mailing list.  That will save our Post a lot of money.  Please notify me ASAP by email when you have a change of address.  Please check the expiration dates on bread & cake mixes, pancake mix, brownie mix, Bisquick, etc. that you have in your cupboard.  The yeast develops spores overtime and the mold that forms in old mixes becomes toxic.  It can be deadly.  May God bless each and every one of you with good health and happiness.  For God and Country, B.J. Miller
