MARCH 2011

COMMANDER:    The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Saturday, 12 March in Ocean View.  Parade participants show time is 9:00 a.m. Officers:  Blue & Gray. The race is on and the float for the parade is gaining steam.  If you can help please call me at the Post and I will put you to work.  There is plenty for anyone who can swing a hammer, measure a cubic, or drive the animals up the ramp.  Come on, let’s have some fun with this one.

The foundation blocks were sold the first day with the money going to the general fund.  If you have items that you would like to see go to a good home, please list it with the editor at the Post number.

The position for the Emblem sales was filled after a long line of applicants.  Thanks to all that applied.  There will be more positions posted in the coming months.

In reviewing the membership roster this past week, it was wonderful to note the number of 40, 50, and yes, we do have a 60, Mr. Reed, with 61 continuous years.  I want to thank everyone for their years and the support that you give to the greatest Post this side of the big ditch.

FIRST NOTICE:  The election of Post Officers will be held Tuesday, 10 May 2011 at the regular meeting at 8:00 p.m.  If you would like to run for an office please submit your name to the Nomination Committee, Adjutant Mike Bukowski or Finance Officer Ray Steckman.  All post positions are open each year and any Post member can run if they have been initiated.  Please do not run for an office just to hold a title.  You must be present at the meeting to be elected, if not, you must submit a letter of intent.  Be sure to attend the meeting to vote for your choice of Legion members running for office for the upcoming year.  For God and Country, Larry Turner

FIRST VICE COMMANDER:  Membership is at 83% for the year 2011 with 884 members renewing. Will the other 17% please renew?  Dues are $35.  Please help us meet our goal.  For God and Country, B.J. Miller

ADJUTANT:  Don’t’ forget to register.  The Department of Virginia Spring Conference will be held at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel at 2800 Shore Drive in Virginia Beach.  Dates are March 11-13.  For God and Country, Mike Bukowski

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER:  Clyde Toler is back home after having a pacemaker installed. During our 8 Feb meeting a Post Everlasting was held for Alan Morrill.  Alan was a retired Marine “Mustang”.  We also lost long-time member “Skip” Kelly.  Skip worked very hard for a lot of years for Post 327 along with his wife, Joyce.  Skip prepared a lot of meals for our enjoyment.  A “celebration of life” was held for Skip on Saturday, 19 Feb. in the Club Room.  Post Everlasting will be held March 8th during our Post meeting at 8:00 p.m.

As some of you know, one of the oldest American Legion posts in the world meets at Post 327.  Post 118 the “All women’s post” lost Lorraine Gury.  Lorraine served in the U.S. Navy as a wave in WWII.  For God and Country, Tony Moore

SERVICE OFFICER:  Since last month I have 7 new VA claims.  No claims for financial assistance from our special charity fund and no TFAs.   I’m requesting an Assistant Service Officer.  Please contact me at 1-434-401-8501.  The next Service Officer training will be held at Legion Leadership College in August.  The Department will reimburse for tuition and room. For God and Country, Alonzo Scott

SQUADRON 327 PAST COMMANDER:  Greetings.  Well, March is here and the weather is getting warmer.  The Post is getting a float together for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  Larry would like to have help decorating by anyone who can assist.  Also, I believe any of our young Sons and Junior members will be able to ride on the float in the parade.  Please come out and show your support and let the other fraternal organizations know how much our Legion family works together.

Our Spring Conference is coming up on 12 March at the Virginia Beach Conference Center on Shore Drive.   The SAL meeting will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.  We will have our National Vice Commander from Louisiana joining us as well as the Department Commander and Auxiliary President.  Please come out to this conference held in our back yard and show our leaders why we are one of the best squadrons in Virginia.  At the conference your squadron will be making the following donations:  $200.00 to the Buddy Basket Program to make up 4 baskets to be given to our homeless Vets who will be setting up the first homes they have had in a long time.  These baskets will be filled with household items.  We will present a check for $500.00 for CHKD to be used at our local hospital.  We will present a check for $1,000.00 to the Child Welfare Foundation, which is one of the Son’s biggest projects.  Every year the Sons raise more than double what the Legion raises for this cause.  We are also participating in a Ghent Restaurant Walk for the EdMarc Hospice for Children.  There will be over 1,000 people involved with this.  For our $200 donation, the SAL logo will be printed on all the T-shirts given out to participants.  The logo will also be on tour maps, flyers, posters and banners.  This, along with the logo on their website for at least 6 months, should help spread the word of how the SALs are doing great things for our community.  It is just another reason we have to encourage more people to join our Legion family.  Please try and support any of our programs and remember, without you keeping up your membership, none of this work could be done.  A lot of members have no idea what we do besides coming to the Social Club. Try coming out to one of our monthly meetings and see what’s going on.  With all the different things we do I’m sure there would be something you would like.  If not, all of us are open to new ideas.  For God and Country, Steve Gower, Sr.

ALA PRESIDENT:  Hello ladies!  Well, here we are in March already.   Our elections will be held Tuesday, 3 May 2011.  If anyone is interested in running for an office please contact Victoria Carney.  She is always at the Post on Friday or Saturday night or you can leave a note for her behind the bar.

Our dinner on Friday, March 4th will be ham, green beans, potatoes, and dessert.

If anyone is interested in participating in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 12th, please contact me at 583-8603.

We are at almost 90% on our membership.  If you have not renewed please do so as soon as possible.  We would appreciate it.

A quick note on community service, if anyone has hours collected for things you have done, please get them to us so we can put it all in our reports.  For God and Country, Nancy Bell
