JANUARY 2012

COMMANDER:  I wish all of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year.  As the calendar year closes, we are about halfway through the Legion year.  Thanks to all of you who have renewed your membership for 2012.  If you haven’t been able to renew yet, won’t you take a few minutes and do it now?  We have a great many programs in progress and could sure use the financial help from your membership dues.  We currently have a committee working on changes to the Post bylaws.  Post members: this newsletter is your first notice that we will be voting on bylaws changes at an upcoming meeting (likely the March regular meeting).  The proposed changes to the bylaws will be posted on our website for all to review prior to the meeting.  The Post has received a generous donation to be used for a scholarship.  A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded at the February regular meeting.  The details for eligibility, application process, and judging will be posted on the website:  www.legion327.org .  My current prediction is that the scholarship will be awarded for a student entering (or applying to) an accredited institute of higher learning.  The applicant will be required to write an essay on the theme of “Americanism” –so, start getting the ideas rolling and keep checking the website for more information.

Once we flip the calendar to 2012, it is time to honor those who put their lives on the line daily in protection of our communities.  Law & Order Night will be held Tuesday, Jan 24 in the Meeting Hall.  6:00 p.m. – social time, 6:30 p.m. – dinner, and 8:00 p.m. – awards meeting. Won’t you come out and show your support?  Let’s see how many Legionnaires we can have in attendance this year!  For God and Country, Mike Bukowski

ATHLETIC OFFICER: 1st, a happy new year from my family to yours.  Not a lot going on in the athletic world.  Please read Past CDR Turner’s article on the bowling tournament.  I would like to take up this space with a big thank you to all the volunteers who have worked the tickets for me during the 2011 season.  Thank you “flip flop” (Fred), Crystal, Dot, Tony, Byron, Jim C., Jim P. and of course, the 4-6:00 p.m. lady, Ms. Joyce, for helping us out.  With your help we have been able to send two young ladies to girl’s state, support 3 little league teams, one adult coed and 1 men’s team.  We also had 18 young men on a Legion baseball team. Keep up the good work.  For God and Country, Jim Norton

AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS: At the request of his grandson Jesse, ALR was proud and honored to provide a motorcycle escort for the funeral of Legionnaire Bernard “Bernie” Kofira. It was a large and impressive turnout of riders. Our prayers are with the Kofira family. Also, in December, ALR once again participated in the placement of Christmas wreaths at the headstones of over 3,500  veterans’ graves at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk. In addition, our members have and continue to support and participate in the many veteran assistance programs established by our Legion Post 327.  For God and Country, Ted Van Horn

SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER:  Hello members!   I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and that you have a blessed new year.  Big reminder – No new card – No new key for 2012.  SAL dues are $25 for 21 years and older, under 21 and duals are $10.  Let’s keep those membership dues rolling in.  We sent $200.00 to the Food Bank, Kids, Inc. and the Union Mission.  Keep in mind the bowling tournament February 24-26.  Your help is needed some time during that weekend for one of the groups.  P.S.  God bless each and every one of you.  For God and Country, Dave Samson

ALA PRESIDENT: Hello Ladies! Happy New Year, everybody.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and you’re ready for the new year. Thank you to everyone who brought in gifts for the Angel Tree.  I know the children at St. Mary’s were very grateful.

We are having a meatloaf dinner with all the fixings on Friday, 6 January.  Please don’t forget we have Law and Order night the last Tuesday in January.  Post 327 will be honoring Police officers, Firemen, Paramedics and State Troopers.  Please come out and support these fine men and women.

If you didn’t pay your 2011 dues by December 31st, you are delinquent.  We are striving for 100% as soon as we can.  See one of us so you can get caught up.  For God and Country, Nancy Bell

The Virginia State 2012 Bowling Tournament will be hosted by Post 327 on Feb 25 and 26, 2012 at the Little Creek Amphib Base lanes Norfolk, Va. The packages were mailed to the team captains from last year with the register applications. This year you will see that we had to raise the cost to cover the prize money and the admin to a total of $73.00 per person that will bowl in all events single, double, and team. There is a block of rooms at the Best Western in Ocean View at $56.00 a night and other hotels in the area. This is a great time to show our post off to the rest of Virginia. There will be dinner both Friday and Saturday evening followed by entertainment both nights. As always, the need for volunteers to make this event a success is needed, so as you see the sign-up sheets posted please sign up. More info can be obtained by asking for a package from any of the post officers. Thank You.  For God & Country, Past Commander Larry Turner
