AUGUST 2008

COMMANDER:  I would like to thank everyone that helped with the Ocean View Crab & Seafood Fest.  All of you did a great job.  Thanks to our Historian Tony Moore for arriving early and taking charge of the set up and cleanup for Post 327.  We almost got rained out, but it turned out to be a great day.  The 2nd District Planning Meeting will be August 17th at Post 327 at 9:00 a.m. (No host breakfast at 9:00 a.m., meeting starts at 10:00 a.m.)  Membership is off to a good start.  We need your renewals to reach our 100% goal for 2009.  Please renew for 2009 if you haven’t already done so.  Congratulations to our Adjutant Victoria Bell on her selection as CPO.  Congratulations also go to our 2nd VCDR Michael Bukowski.  The Post 327 History Scrap Book he presented at the Department Convention at Falls Church took second place in the state.  He did an excellent job as our Historian this past year.  For God and Country, B. J. Miller

SECOND VICE COMMANDER:  First, I would like to offer a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers that helped out at the Independence Day picnic.  It was a huge success due to your participation.  The Labor Day picnic will fall on Sunday, August 31st this year.  Picnic will run from 12 noon to 6:00 pm.  Food will start serving at 1:00 p.m. and run until 5:00 p.m.  Bring a dish that serves ten or more people and get in free.  Also, at the Labor Day picnic those with the Early Bird stamp on their membership card get in free.  I am planning on adding fried fish to the menu, along with the usual hamburgers, hot dogs and sausages.  Do you have some summer veggies in your garden?  Bring in some bell peppers and/or onions, and we’ll grill them up on the side for the sausages.  If you can, please think about volunteering.  We can always use folks for set up, beer tapping, preparing and running food, and especially tear down and clean up.  Hope to see you there!  For God and Country, Mike Bukowski

CHAPLAIN:  Post Everlasting will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 12 August for Legionnaires Benjamin F. Smith, William (Bill) F. Miller, and Gyle L. Hare.  Family and friends are invited to attend.  For God and Country, Rob Edwards

AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS:  We will be serving Chuck Wagon Stew on Friday, 29 August.  Please come out and support our fundraiser for charity.  Our meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.  For God and Country, Jim Hollenbeck

ATHLETIC OFFICERWell, baseball is almost over.  The Juniors finished up Saturday, the 19th of July at Fleet Park losing to Post 113.  They finished the year at 1 and 15.  The Seniors played July 23rd, and as I write this my crystal ball is not working, so you will have to wait until next month for the results.  The CDR would like to have a bowling meeting for the State Bowling Tournament on the 24th of August at 5:00 p.m.  A lot of things need to be discussed so, hopefully, all of you volunteers will be there.  For God and Country, Jim Norton

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY PRESIDENT:  Hi!  I hope everyone enjoyed the July 4th picnic.  By all assessments it was a great success.  Most of your officers just returned from the Department Convention. A good time was had by all.  Unit 327 was honored to receive 3 awards.  One was the convention award for Children & Youth and the VA&R award for best overall program for the state.  We were also given the highest honor of all - the Dr. Kate Waller Barrett trophy for outstanding Unit of Virginia.  We were all very proud of our Unit.  We all worked very hard this year, and it was great being recognized for it.
Don't forget, we have the Ruth Hanna Memorial Cold Plate dinner on Friday, the 1st of August.  Our first official meeting for the new year will be August 5th at 8:00 p.m.  Please come and join us.  Congratulations to our Lady of the Year Lee Forest.  Also, don't forget, we are taking your membership dues for 2008-2009.  For God and Country, Nancy Bell

SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER:  Greetings Comrades!  Congratulations to all who have been involved with your Squadron.  I'm happy to report that your hard work paid off!  Our Squadron took home 2 out of 3 awards at the State Convention.  We won the top awards for Child Welfare and VA&R.  My thanks go out to all who have helped this past year.  We only missed sweeping all 3 awards by 5 points.  I'm sure next year we can win all 3!  Legion College is next week, and we have 5 SAL signed up to attend.  This is our largest group in a long time, and I hope we have some future leaders ready to take over.  Also, congratulations go out to Jeff Evans, who has been chosen to be one of our new instructors.  I'm sure with his many years of service to the SAL, he will do a great job.  We had our 2nd Poker Run last week, and although I don't have the final report yet, I would like to thank all who helped out here at the Post and all the stops along the way.  It’s going to be great to present the Fisher House a big check as a result of all our hard work.  The Fisher House is also our new Detachment Commander's project, so I'm sure this will make him proud.  This is a new year starting, so let's all get together and renew your membership early, please help with dinners and ticket sales, so we can make this another great year!  For God and Country, Steve Gower, Sr.

ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT:  New locks will be installed in the lockers in august.  See the bartender for the master key.  Your new key will be taped inside on the door.  Suggestion box:  I am informed of all suggestions put into the box.  Most items are for the club manager to act on. As for putting paper out for suggestions, a clipboard was tried and complained about, forms were put out, 1out of 8 was used and the rest disappeared.  We will try the forms again and see what happens.  For God and Country, Jim Martin.

ASSOCIATION CLUB MANAGER:  Please call the Club (587-2641) for dinners and entertainment that are not on the calendar.  Reminder:  Anyone helping in the kitchen MUST have a Food Handlers card.  For more info call 683-2709.  For God and Country, Sandra Wright

BOWLING:  Sunday bowlers, there will be an organizational meeting at Post 327 on Sunday, 3 August at 1:00 p.m.  The league starts Sunday, 14 September 2008.  If you have any questions, please call the League Secretary Jean Lewis at 971-7080.  For God and Country, Jean Lewis

HUMOR:  From my email - Remember, we're all going to be old some day. Have a great life.
A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things.  During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.  Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair.  "Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?" he asks.  "Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"  "Sure."  "Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?" she asks.  "No, I can remember it."  "Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too.  Maybe you should write it down so as not to forget it?"  He says, "I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries."  "I'd also like whipped cream.  I'm certain you'll forget that.  Write it down?" she asks.  Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down; I can remember it!  Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!"  Then he toddles into the kitchen.  After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.  She stares at the plate for a moment then asks.  "Where's my toast?"

EDITOR:  I would like to thank all of our volunteers.  I look forward to seeing you all at the Labor Day picnic.  Remember, we are all volunteers, so if you can help with the clean up after the picnic, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please continue to report any community service hours and all expenses/contributions that you make.  May God bless each and every one of you with good health and happiness.  For God and Country, B.J. Miller
