Maples, II

FIRST VICE COMMANDERWe have achieved the 100% goal for 2007, and we have started out the Early Bird renewal for 2008 with a good start.  As of the printing of this newsletter we have already reached our first goal of over 35%.  Let’s keep the renewals coming in to reach our 100% before the end of the year.  God and Country, Byron Pianalto

SECOND VICE COMMANDER:  Thanks to all that helped (and you know who you are) in making the 4th of July picnic a success (They only give me a little paragraph, so I can’t list everyone that helped and I don’t want to leave anyone out).  From the comments I’ve received, a good time was had by all.  Preparations are well underway for Labor Day, the picnic will be held on the 2nd of September, 2007 from Noon ‘til 6:00 p.m., with food available from 1-5:00 p.m.  Don’t forget this is the Early Bird picnic so to those of you that are helping Byron get his 100% early, and have an Early Bird stamp on your 2008 membership card, it’s free for you.  And, as usual, the same will apply to those that bring a side dish with 10 or more servings.  The sign up sheet for those that would like to help out will be posted shortly.  Let's have another great turnout.  For God and Country, Gary L. Rodencal

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY PRESIDENT:  Hello Ladies.  August is here, and we are starting our New Year off.  Remember your membership ladies, get your early bird. The renewal letters will not be going out from National until October sometime, but I’m letting you know about it now.  The JRs will be hosting the dinner this month and it will be Bar-B-Que, so come out and support our future leaders. The Male Dancers will be here August 31st, get your tickets early.  I want to let you all know that we brought home the CONVENTION award for Children and Youth this year.  Thanks to all who helped with that program.  Your incoming Department President is Patricia Knight.  Don’t forget about the JRs Breakfast this month as well.  Ladies, this coming year we will be celebrating our 60th Anniversary on March 22nd, 2008.  We will form a committee, so if you are interested, please see one of the officers.  For God and Country, Dawn Thomas

SQUADRON 327 COMMANDER:  Hello, well I'm fresh back from the State Convention in Falls Church.  I would like to thank the Legion family for all your help and support during the past year, serving as your State Commander.  The Detachment of Virginia set record numbers in membership and donations, with your squadron playing a big role.  All of your hard work helped Squadron 327 receive the top awards at the Convention for Children & Youth and VA & R.  I would like to thank Jeff Evans for doing an outstanding job as my C &Y AND C.M.N. Chairman.  I also would like to thank Dave Samson for doing a great job serving as commander during Brook's absence.  With all of your support I'm looking forward to a great year as your Commander. Johnnie, Dawn and I are going to be planning a lot of outings for the legion family.  The first will be a Tides Game on Aug. 18 at 7:15 p.m.  We hope to have about 60 tickets.  Look for sign up sheet at the Post.  Hope to see a lot of you at Legion College and in Reno for the National Convention.  There are more good things to come next month.  It’s great to be back!  For God and Country, Steve Gower, Sr.

ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT:  Hope everyone is having a great summer and staying out of the heat.  I spoke with an old time member last week “Jack Benny.”  He had just gotten out of the hospital with, as he stated, “a mild heart attack”.  If anyone would like Jack’s address, please see me.  No new ideas in the suggestion box this month, I guess the novelty has worn off.  We will have an outdoor clean-up next month, so please keep an eye on the bulletin board for date and time.  Get well Jack, and come and see us.  For God and Country. Jim Norton

ATHLETIC OFFICER:  Bowlers there will be a meeting on the 19 of August at 1:00 pm in the meeting room to discuss committees for the State bowling tournament which Post 327 will host.  Anyone who can spare a few hours to help make this the best bowling tournament ever, please attend.  You don’t need to be a bowler to volunteer to help.  Thanks.  For God and Country, Jim Norton

ASSOCIATION CLUB MANAGER:  As you read your newsletter you will notice we have a lot of entertainment planned in the month of August.  Please try to participate and support these functions.  Without your support these functions have no meaning - and get rather costly!!!  Refer to the newsletter calendar for scheduled entertainment and dinners.  Also, please remember a lot of planning and preparation goes into our dinners, so PLEASE try to support them.  Dinners are part of the fundraising for our charities.  A REMINDER:  Please refrain from bringing $100 bills into the Clubroom.   For God & Country, Sandra Wright

HUMOR:  ESTATE PLANNING 101 - When Dan found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed a woman to enjoy it with.  So, one evening he went to a singles bar where he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.  Her natural beauty took his breath away.  "I may look like just an ordinary man," he said as he walked up to her, "but in just a week or two, my father will die, and I'll inherit 20 million dollars."  Impressed, the woman went home with him that evening and, three days later, she became his stepmother.  Sometimes women are so much smarter than men.

EDITOR:  I hope everyone enjoyed the 16th Annual Oceanview Crab Feast.  A special thanks to everyone who helped me with the Post dinner and Buddy/Buddy last month including my husband, Ken, Sandi, Sharon Bukowski, Daryl Van Horn, Ken O’Bryan and Johnnie Maples.  May God bless each of you with good health and happiness.  For God and Country, B.J. Miller-Nobles
